  The Story Behind the Journey Solomon’s Journey to Joy

This story is filled with imagination, but its heart belongs to a very real man: my great-great-grandfather, and my co-author’s great-great-great-grandfather, Solomon Koonce.

Solomon lived in Crockett County, Tennessee, and his life was a testament to resilience. Though he faced many hardships, the legacy he left behind wasn’t just one of survival—it was one of family, faith, and the pursuit of a better life.

I wrote Solomon’s Journey to Joy to honor him and the generations that followed: my great-grandfather Mose, my grandparents William and Bessie, and my beautiful mother, Ernestine Koonce Brady. They taught me that no matter where our path leads, joy is a destination we can always find.

As we gather for our family reunions in Tennessee, we walk the same ground they once did. This book is my way of making sure their names and the joy they fought for are never forgotten.
